Salmon to Salem

We made the trip from Salmon, ID to Eastern Oregon via Hyway 21, pretty country
but it is one crooked road. We stayed at the Prineville Reservoir where our friends were
Crawdad fishing.
We are able to visit with Merle & Jan. I helped Merle a couple days setting and pulling pots
, it is similar to crabing.
Then Merle insisted on buying us dinner, just because Aug 18 was Jerry's birthday;-)
It was a wonderful meal and good company.

We moved on over here to Salem and will be here until the 26 of Aug. Staying at the Salem Elks. They have a nice little RV park here.

Geocaching & more.

Geocaching... A worldwide group of GPS users. Users place 'caches' in locations all over the world. These can be anything from a small magnetic key box to something larger. There are rules and guidelines for individuals to follow. Some caches are placed in easy location , some are more difficult which may require a hike to get to. There are also Earth caches , which are simply landmarks the person placing the cache think may be interesting.
With our travels all over we decided to see if we could find a few. So far this trip we have found two. It is simple process, online we go to the Geocaching website , put in the zip code s and get a list of caches in your area.
http://www.geocaching.com/

We input the coordinates in the GPS and follow the map.

This particular cache pictured here was a location in Idaho called the Pirimids, this was a location where Lewis & Clark passed by on there expedition out west. These are formations created over millions of years.

Further up the road we met a fellow way up in the hills, who, we found out later, is a well known artist, engraving and carving. We stopped in front of his home(studio) and he invited us in for a tour. He showed us many of his creations. He had been in a high stress government job dealing with chemical warfare, and had taken up carving years ago. We were impressed, and no , he didn't try to sell us anything.

Small world

A friend of a friend invited me up to the R/C flying field the other evening. This fellow pictured to the right was also passing thru Salmon, ID, and had parked his motorhome at the R/C field.
We sat around BS'ing, an earthquake was mentioned in the conversation, I told them about when I was on a flightcrew back in 1964, flying relief & supplies into Kodiak Is, Alaska. This fellow says, 'really, so did I' , he was a young LT assigned to the Naval Air Station at Whidbey Is Washington. Same as me. I said LT Weatherly?? He replies 'thats me'.........
Turns out he was my plane commander(Pilot ) on several flights. While not flying I was assigned to maintenance shop. He was officer in charge of maintenance.!!!!!!!!
We didn't hang out together of course, I was enlisted and he was an officer. We knew many of the same people stationed there.
We both served in Vietnam in different squadrons.
I have met many people along the road over the last few years, this was one of those memorable
times.
yep thats me taxing my plane and the road going back down the hill to Salmon. This field was BLM land adminstered by the Dept of the Interior.

A groupof R/C flyers petitioned for use of the land some 20 yrs ago and was awarded the land.
It is a great place.

And of course a shot of Molly posing;-)
